Observations of life by author and poet Charles L. Chatmon
This is an important day in my life. It's the day when my first book The Depths of My Soul was released to the public. It took a year to see it edited, formatted and published. When I held a copy of the book in my hands later that night at a coffee shop, it was a feeling I never wanted to leave. It was the best feeling in the world.
Before I start, I would like to say that none of this would not be possible without The Lord allowing me to have the opportunity in sending people my way to make this day and the result a reality. I want to thank Him so much for helping me achieve my dream.
Before that moment, my publisher held a book signing inside her bookstore. Family, friends and neighbors were in attendance to watch and hear me recite poems from The Depths for an hour. Once the applause was over, I wound up signing (and selling!) forty six books that day! If only it were that easy in real life.......
Last month, I wrote and published my latest book Storm Over South Central which I enjoy so much, but today it's all about The Depths. I've encountered a lot of good folks and fellow authors along the way, but I've also encountered folks who I should not have wasted time with, but that's life. All I will say is that I'm very happy and proud to wear this name of author for twenty years. Returning to that moment at the coffee shop. I sat alone that night among a crowd of people who didn't even know me. I didn't feel alone, having accomplished this feat. What mattered to me the most is that I achieved my dream, I wrote a book. I was so happy and so proud to have that book in my hands. My parents were extremely happy that day. I wasn't the only one proud that day. To see the faces of my mother and father of pride their son wrote a book made them happy. That's one of the reasons I love to write. Their joy is my motivation.
I want to say to all of you who are planning to write a book not in the near future but a mythical 'someday', don't wait. Use this time now to sit down and work on your story, poem, non-fiction account, etc. Just sit down and write. We're all waiting for you. I am waiting for you. It is such a great feeling to hold that book in your hands and see the places you'll go, the celebrities you meet, the times well spent networking with other authors.
In closing, this day is a special day for me. It's a day I could look up and finally say, "I'm an author." There no other words of joy to say here, so this is all I have to say.
